Publication Abstract

In the most generic sense, power laws are a formalization of the sentiment "large is rare, small is common."  When visualized, they tend to produce a long tail (Pareto) distribution.  Power laws can model a number of diverse phenomenon-such as web links, citations to academic papers, the size of earthquake magnitudes…and potentially national science funding.
